New York City Flower Powered Taxis - Garden in Transit

September 24, 2007

If you haven’t noticed, New York City taxis are blooming. Pretty much everywhere you look you can see one of these flower powered taxis. Nice!

The New York City urban art show is called, Garden in Transit. According to the NYC.GOV website:

Garden in Transit is a public art project that will be displayed on New York City’s yellow taxicabs in the Fall of 2007. This privately-funded project will celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York’s first traditional metered taxicab as part of TAXI ‘07, an initiative led by the Taxi and Limousine Commission and the Design Trust for Public Space.

nyc-taxi-2.gifThe Garden in Transit project is the brainchild of Bernie and Ed Massey. Their flower decal art project has been painted by 23,000 disabled and seriously ill children and adults throughout New York City. The taxis will display the artwork from September to December 2007.

A project such as this sort of brings all New Yorkers a little bit closer. Well, maybe that’s a stretch, but at least it gives us all something interesting to talk about. If you’re walking down the street or waiting at a crosswalk, it sure is a great conversation starter. Heck, these flowers are natural ice breakers that allow us to chat with our fellow man on the street without them having to be defensive. If you know what I mean? :)

Kudos to those who put this art project together. Thanks for making my days a little brighter.
